We took the old Land Commander for its first voyage under our ownership this weekend. We went to Big Eddy Park just outside Vernonia, Oregon. Nice place, nice big spots, and it’s the first time that backing up a trailer hasn’t devolved into a shouting match, so there’s that. The QX4 tows well, but it only managed about 13 mpg... but then, this trailer isn’t exactly what you’d call aerodynamic.
Doggos enjoyed it too, though they don’t care much for car rides.
Well, you know...

N ice mug. I seriously dig the teal, teal stripe, teal stove. The interior, and those metal diamond accents or whatever you want to call them, reminds me of an old Sil ver Diner that I used to live by (old in the sense that I went there as a kid, not that the Silver Diner building itself was old).

Is the QX4 a newer one with the VQ? I always liked those.

Yeah, it’s an ‘03 with the VQ35. Only 2WD, though. We’ve both
had great luck with Nissan trucks over the years
: I had a 720 4WD in college, my wife had a nice D22 Frontier before we met that she absolutely loved, and we had a fantastic old 2WD 5 speed
D21 Pathfinder
that had 365,000 miles on it when she finally made me sell it. So
far so good on this one, though it has a tiny coolant leak I haven’t pinpointed yet.

We have a matching striped awning on order for it. I’ll get a photo when it’s up.

Cue the outpouring of love for that gen QX4...because it’s awesome! I saw the previous post about the trailer, but what a great combo!

Samesies, I think you can put this gen QX4 on the “if you at all care about cars, you like these” list.

W hen I lived in Wisconsin I almost bought a 4wd one, or Pathfinder LE. I wanted the VQ + full-time 4wd combo. The slip-n-grip system isn’t necessarily as good as the Torsen center diff in 4Runners of similar vintage. B ut the Pathy/QX4 is way roomier and better to drive on-road thanks to being unibody, and most of them had rear LSDs. Only problem was I couldn’t find a good local one to me. I checked out a QX4 but it was way rusty in the wheel arches inside the back doors. I e nded up getting an ‘05 Grand Cherokee instead which had electrical problems instead of rust problems.

The way your dog is sitting looks extremely uncomfortable, but he seems cool with it lol.

She’s 14 years old, and her back legs are almost completely paralyzed. They’re always sticking out at some funny angle. She gets around by scooting along with her front legs and dragging her butt around. We thought about getting her one of those doggie wheelchairs, but our house has a lot of stairs and we were worried about her falling down them. So we mostly just carry her around...
She’s also a bit incontinent, hence the diaper.

Yo I love that trailer and everything, but, I need to see more of these 3 spoke rims on that QX4.

13 mpg? how frugal. We got 8-9 both ways due to super high speeds (80 mph) and a 15-20 mph headwind both ways. I got as good as 13 on one leg without wind though. Given that there isn’t a lot of aero drag on the trailer, most of that is just speed.
Not from this trip, but what it basically looks like towing.

Qx4's are good and comfortable , especially the 3.5's. Just have to watch for rust in the front shock towers, there is a recall ... Coolant leaks are interesting, basically everything that has coolant in it, I’ve replaced on them :) Most fun are water pumps, they weep behind the A/C compressor...
